Non-profit food rescue organizations City Harvest and The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) have joined forces with industrial automation pioneer Berkshire Grey to bring much-needed food to thousands of families this Thanksgiving. The partnership will help feed thousands of New York and New England families through special packages of Thanksgiving foods such as potatoes, beans and stuffing that are in high demand. As part of this effort, Berkshire Grey is donating 40,000 pounds of food. In addition, Berkshire Grey’s robotic picking, packing, and sortation technology will efficiently select and rapidly package the shelf-stable food into ready-for-distribution boxes. Since its creation…

The term “elegance” appears frequently on Exotec's website, and you might just dismiss it as another tagline in the vast sea of content marketing. However, for the company, this is not just a marketing phrase; it is also a design philosophy. The approach started with the idea of mathematical elegance. That is, finding solutions and proofs that are surprisingly simple yet insightful. There are plenty of definitions of mathematical elegance out there, but the key tenets typically include: Simplicity: An elegant mathematical proof or solution tends to be simple, cutting straight to the heart of the problem without unnecessary steps…

PITTSBURGH—As warehouse operators increasingly turn to automation to solve some of their biggest supply chain challenges, what do they need to keep in mind as they scale up? That was one of the central questions tackled during “The Supply Chain Revolution” panel at the Cascadia Connect Robotics, Automation, and Artificial Intelligence (RAAI) conference here this week. Composed of executives and founders from some well-known U.S. robotics companies, panelists included Bernard Casse, founder and CEO of RIOS Intelligent Machines; Thomas Evans, robotics chief technology officer at Honeywell; Erik Nieves, co-founder and CEO of Plus One Robotics Inc.; Damion Shelton, co-founder and…

For the first time, yearly orders of robots from non-automotive sectors surpassed automotive robot orders, as sales of robotic units in North America increased 3.5% in 2020 from 2019. This growth was driven by a strong Q4 that was the second-best quarter ever for North American robotic sales with a 63.6% increase over Q4 2019. Industry statistics – released today by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), part of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) – show that North American companies ordered 31,044 robotic units, valued at $1.572 billion in 2020. In Q4, companies ordered 9,972 units valued at $479 million.…

Labor shortages and the COVID-19 pandemic have posed serious challenges for warehouses and distribution centers. Honeywell International Inc. yesterday announced a strategic collaboration with OTTO Motors to provide automation throughout North America for help with labor-intensive tasks, such as moving carts, pallets, or totes. Honeywell said the partnership enables its customers to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and improve safety by deploying OTTO Motors’ autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) in their facilities. “Supply chains continue to be stressed by staffing shortages and consumer demands driving expectations of speedy and accurate fulfillment,” said Keith Fisher, president of Honeywell Intelligrated. “Tackling the more dynamic,…

As ProMat DX begins this week, Vecna Robotics is among the vendors that will be presenting at the virtual event for materials handling. The Waltham, Mass.-based company will be demonstrating its latest mobile robots and orchestration software, which it claims can improve productivity across busy warehouses and factories for both humans and robots. “When you pair humans and technology, you have superhuman warehouse workers,” said Daniel Theobald, founder and CEO of Vecna Robotics. “Where you have dynamic environments, such as medical device manufacturers or big distributors, our systems can unambiguously beat our AGV [automated guided vehicle] competitors.” “Our overall goal…

Honeywell International Inc. yesterday announced its Smart Flexible Depalletizer, which is designed to help warehouses and distribution centers automate the manual process of unloading pallets. The Charlotte, N.C.-based company said its latest robotic innovation can reducing the operational risks of potential injuries and labor shortages. Driven by machine learning and advances in perception and gripping technologies, Honeywell said its Smart Flexible Depalletizer minimizes the need for human workers to break down pallet loads. Such roles are at risk for safety incidents, experience high turnover, and are currently difficult to fill. A typical midsize to large distribution center unpacks up to…

Montreal is a North American fashion capital. For more than a century, the Garment District established the city as a hub of innovation in design, manufacturing, and handling of textiles. Planiform was founded in the 1970s to deliver systems for demanding garment manufacturing and dry-cleaning applications. Just as styles have changed over the past 50 years, Planiform’s conveyance and garment-on-hangar (GOH) systems have continued to evolve. The company has increased automation capabilities to meet new requirements for industrial laundry services and distribution centers. Planiform’s latest innovation, the GOH Hive, enables fashion retailers to boost e-commerce efficiencies, according to Charlotte Girod,…

While more operations are deploying Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) in their facilities, not every existing ground floor surface can support them. Many existing concrete floors have swales and slopes, cracks and spalling, and surfaces that can’t stand up to repetitive robotic traffic patterns. Fortunately, ResinDek® panels can be installed directly on top of an existing ground floor. ResinDek is the perfect flooring for industrial robots, the panels create a level floor with surface characteristics that are critical for the successful deployment of robots. Further, they’ve been tested extensively in the labs of numerous AGV and…

If ever a time was ripe for robotic lift truck sales to take off, right now might be it. With the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating e-commerce demand for many types of goods, factories and fulfillment centers need to move a high volume of pallets to keep stores stocked and e-commerce order-picking systems or manual pick locations topped off with goods. Vendors say that return on investment (ROI) in two years or less is possible for automated lift trucks, but some complexities are involved, like knowing how to phase them into an operation and identifying automated or semi-automated applications that make the…
