Vancouver International Airport has given travelers more food options with the addition of TrendiTech's robotic smoothie machines.

Vancouver International has installed five robotic smoothie machines made by TrendiTech at various locations at its airport.

Three machines are located in domestic departures; one is located in U.S. departures; and another is located in international departures. Each machine blends healthy smoothies in about a minute with no added sugars or preservatives, according to TrendiTech.

“We are excited to work with YVR and have travelers and airport staff alike be able to access The Smoothie Machine and enjoy delicious smoothies at any time of the day,” said Carissa Campeotto, TrendiTech cofounder and CMO. “Each smoothie exclusively uses misfit fruit and veggies, picked directly from a farm and rescued before they would be wasted.

“YVR is one of the biggest and renowned airports, visited by many people across the world. It’s incredible to have the opportunity to showcase The Smoothie Machine and our mission to fight food waste on a global scale, especially since 3.5 billion tons of food is wasted globally each year,” Campeotto added. “We are so proud of our team for making this passionate project come to fruition.”

The smoothies are dispensed into recyclable cups, along with a lid and single paper straw. Payments can be made using Apple Pay and Google Wallet.

What flavors are there?

At launch, customers will have access to four flavors:

  • Groovy Guava with guava, papaya, soursop, apple, lime, and turmeric

  • Berry Breeze with strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, and apple
  • Mango Tango with mango, banana, passion fruit, ginger, and lemon
  • Strawburst with strawberry, banana, orange, beet, and apple

The flavors were created by Trendi’s president and chief culinary innovation officer Christine Couvelier, a chef and global culinary trendologist who has worked with President’s Choice, Maple Leaf Foods, and Unilever.

“YVR aims to become a destination for a variety of dining experiences for travellers, no matter the time of day,” said Eric Pateman, director of culinary experiences at Vancouver Airport Authority, in a statement. “We anticipate the demand for healthy meals and snacks to be high from travellers leaving and arriving to a health-conscious city like Vancouver. We know the partnership with Trendi will allow more customers to stick to their dietary preferences and requirements as they travel and feel great about their selection.”
