maxon, which provides motors for robots in demanding applications, has teamed up with the MassRobotics collaborative to encourage innovation in motion control technologies.

Massachusetts consortium MassRobotics and motor provider maxon today announced that they have partnered to support the robotics innovation ecosystem. Taunton, Mass.-based maxon said its extensive experience with electric drives and motion control technologies will help companies advance the automation industry.

“maxon is excited to partner with MassRobotics to push the boundaries of technology working with the robotics community on advancements in this fast-growing robotics industry,” stated Chris Blake, CEO of maxon USA.

maxon develops and manufactures brushed and brushless DC motors, as well as gearheads, encoders, controllers, sensors, spindle drives, and entire mechatronic systems. The company said its drives are useful where the requirements for precision are stringent, such as in NASA's Mars rovers, surgical power tools, humanoid robots, and industrial automation applications.

To maintain its more than 60 years of leadership, maxon said it invests a “considerable” share of its annual revenue in research and development. The company has more than 3,500 employees at nine production sites and is represented by sales companies in more than 30 countries.

With full engineering design services, technology development, and drive system manufacturing capabilities in Massachusetts, maxon said it helps design engineers reduce their time to market.

The company said it will work with MassRobotics and the other companies, organizations, and leading research centers to innovate across a wide range of applications, especially in the medical and mobility robotic markets.

As a global company, maxon said it can leverage qualified suppliers, standard and customized products, as well as validated processes.

MassRobotics on a mission to promote innovation

“The growing demand within the automation space for robots to perform more complex tasks requires advanced controls and drive systems,” said Tom Ryden, executive director of MassRobotics. “MassRobotics’ partnership with maxon gives our startups and other partners access to global control technologies to help the robotics industry continue to advance motion-related hardware.”

Boston-based MassRobotics claimed that it is “the first and largest independent nonprofit robotics startup escalator in the world whose mission is to grow and support robotics innovators and entrepreneurs.” The incubator said it is the result of collaboration among engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs with a shared vision “to create a strong, vibrant robotics ecosystem.”

MassRobotics' stated mission is “to help create and scale the next generation of successful robotics technology and connected devices companies.” It provides startups with shared workspace and resources to develop, prototype, test, and commercialize their systems.

maxon plans to showcase its latest drive technologies in Booth 223 at the Robotics Summit & Expo at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) on May 10 and 11. The company said it will show products offering more torque and more dynamics in the smallest of spaces, as well as systems geared for a variety of robotics applications.

MassRobotics discusss some of the challenges that today’s manufacturers face in North America, raises awareness of some of the latest robotic enabling technologies that are available, and encourages an exchange of ideas to help drive solutions.
