SpaceX has gained worldwide attention for a series of historic milestones. It is the only private company ever to return a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, which it first accomplished in December 2010. The company made history again in May 2012 when its Dragon spacecraft attached to the International Space Station, exchanged cargo payloads, and returned safely to Earth - a technically challenging feat previously accomplished only by governments. Since then Dragon has delivered cargo to and from the space station multiple times, providing regular cargo resupply missions for NASA.

…moon in 2024 as part of a grant from NASA for additive manufacturing research and education as it relates to space technology and applications. Work on this grant is a collaboration between the Navajo Technical University (NTU), who is acting as the lead on the project, with the Marshall Space Flight Center Advanced Manufacturing Center (MSFC), University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH), V&M Global Solutions and Optomec. The team will collaborate on additive manufacturing research around directed energy deposition (DED) of bi-metallic parts for NASA applications and build institutional capacity in STEM research and education. “We’re very excited to be working…

…or M4, which now could be part of future NASA Mars Rover missions. The M4 Morphobot is powered by the NVIDIA Jetson platform for artificial intelligence at the edge and robotics. The institute called the robot the M4 because it can fly, drive, walk, and do eight permutations of motion through a combination of its skills. “It grew in the number of functions that we wanted to do,” said Gharib, a professor of aeronautics and bioinspired engineering at Caltech, in a blog post. “When we proposed it to our design team, at first, they all said, ‘No.’” NASA JPL continues…

…Colorado State University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering for the NASA Robotic Mining Competition (RMC) for a fourth consecutive year. As part of the sponsorship agreement, Allied provides a monetary grant to the team, access to critical components and parts, and advice from Allied’s in-house engineering experts to assist CSU’s team in developing a lunar mining vehicle for the NASA competition. “Our sponsorship of the CSU Lunabotics team is a natural way for Allied to better provide these student engineers with the resources, expertise and materials they need to innovate and further their technical and professional development,” said Ken Bradley, president…

…eventual human missions, and demonstration of new robotics technologies. NASA's Perseverance rover sent data this week indicating that it has successfully cored its first Martian rock. The initial images showed an intact sample present in the tube, but additional images taken after the robot arm acquiried the sample were inconclusive because of poor sunlight conditions. Another round of images with better lighting will be taken before the sample processing continues, said NASA. The Perseverance mission team decided to obtain additional imagery prior to proceeding with the sealing and storing of rock samples after failing to obtain sufficient material on Aug.…

…Founder Institute today announced that it has partnered with NASA Ames Research Center and MassRobotics to create the Founder Institute AI & Robotics Accelerator program in Boston. The new initiative will support entrepreneurs in robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, drones, aerospace, augmented and virtual reality, and related technologies. “In the past year or so, everyone has experienced firsthand how fragile our world is and how normal can change in the blink of an eye, so that’s why it is so important that founders focus on impact-driven ventures,” stated Ignacio Castro, managing director of the Boston Founder Institute. “Our partnership with…

…Mars settlers! Please print your habitat here. If what NASA envisions becomes a reality, such a sign may very well greet the pioneering earthlings who decide to relocate to Mars. In late 2015, as part of its Centennial Challenges program, NASA held a design competition “to build a 3D-printed habitat for deep space exploration, including the agency’s journey to Mars. The multi-phase challenge is designed to advance the construction technology needed to create sustainable housing solutions for Earth and beyond.” The teams were asked to not only render their concepts in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software but also to “autonomously…

…a way to lightweight aircraft and other structures, a NASA-led consortium is exploring ways to shorten the cycle for material development and certification—the goal being to boost competitive advantage among US manufacturers. The Advanced Composites Consortium (ACC), which includes 13 members, including aerospace manufacturers, university partners, and more recently a single software provider, conducts research focused on the accurate prediction of the strength and life of composite structures, rapid inspection of composites, and efficient development of manufacturing processes. Collier Research, maker of HyperSizer optimization software, is the sole software member, committed to using its rapid design tools to explore how…

…set in the drone's third flight on April 25. NASA took more pictures with Ingenuity's black-and-white navigation camera and its color camera. The agency said it plans to use some stereo images to create 3D imagery of the Martian surface. Now that Ingenuity has proven that that powered, controlled flight is possible in the thin atmosphere of Mars, its mission will shift. In a new operations demonstration phase, the drone will explore how aerial scouting and other functions could benefit future exploration of Mars and other worlds. Ingenuity to test capabilities This new phase will begin after the helicopter completes…

…the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. “With Ingenuity, we're trying to do the same for Mars.” “Ingenuity is the latest in a long and storied tradition of NASA projects achieving a space exploration goal once thought impossible,” said Steve Jurczyk, acting NASA administrator. “The X-15 was a pathfinder for the space shuttle. Mars Pathfinder and its Sojourner rover did the same for three generations of Mars rovers. We don’t know exactly where Ingenuity will lead us, but today’s results indicate the sky – at least on Mars – may not be the…

…robot arms. SBIR to enable PickNik fault detection, reporting NASA said it increasingly needs highly autonomous robots to maintain critical spaceflight hardware, and its first SBIR award to PickNik Robotics is for a project titled “A Framework for Failure Management and Recovery for Remote Autonomous Task Planning and Execution.” PickNik is developing a novel fault-detection and reporting system. The system is intended to empower remote operators to diagnose and resolve failures in real time so they can adjust task specifications and guide the robot to recover and complete the objective on site, according to the contract. PickNik said it will…
