Veriff today announced that it has partnered with Starship Technologies to add safety and security measures to autonomous delivery robots in the U.K. The companies claimed that the authentication and re-verification services will enable the “first fully autonomous end-to-end delivery service for age-restricted items.”

Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis formed Starship Technologies in 2014. The company said it has designed autonomous robots to deliver food, groceries, and packages locally in minutes. Alastair Westgarth is the CEO of the company, whose headquarters are in San Francisco and whose main engineering office is in Estonia.
Starship robots accessible by app
Starship said its mobile robots have traveled millions of miles and completed more than 2 million autonomous commercial deliveries around the world as of late last year. The company added that its low-emission robots make more than 100,000 road crossings every day, and its systems also serve numerous college campuses across the U.S.
Consumers can use the Starship Food Delivery smartphone app on iOS and Android to monitor robotic deliveries. They can choose from a range of favorite food or drink items, then drop pins where they want their orders to be sent.
A user can then watch the Starship robot on an interactive map as it travels. Once the robot arrives, the user receives an alert and can then meet the robot.
Veriff uses AI to unlock deliveries
Tallinn, Estonia-based Verif provides identity and age verification using artificial intelligence. The company said its biometric authentication technology will verify a user's identity and unlock Starship's robot at the time of delivery.
Veriff said its platform provides security, enabling Starship users to purchase age-restricted items such as tobacco products and lottery tickets for robotic delivery.
