Local Motors last week announced a strategic partnership with alwaysAI to bring advanced computer vision applications to Local Motors' Olli 2.0 autonomous electric vehicle. The companies said that their combined technologies will dramatically improve the passenger onboarding and in-cabin experiences, as well as overall safety.
“This partnership is critical to unlocking new value for our customers,” stated Vikrant Aggarwal, president of Local Motors. “Our work with alwaysAI is another example of Local Motors' strategy to be open and integrate the best technology into Olli.”
Founded in 2007, Local Motors has begun low-volume vehicle manufacturing of open-source designs using a microfactory model. The Phoenix, Ariz.-based company claimed it has produced the world's first co-created vehicle, the first 3D-printed car, and the first co-created, electric, autonomous vehicle.
alwaysAI to add automated accessibility
Cardiff, Calif.-based alwaysAI provides a platform for developers and enterprises to build, train, deploy, and manage computer vision (CV) applications on Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
The company said its system will enable automated accessibility features and enhanced passenger experience in Local Motor's autonomous vehicle (AV) products. These features will allow transit services to reach more passengers, drive up vehicle utilization, and improve passenger safety.
“Computer vision is a critical part of the new transportation industry,” said Marty Beard, co-founder and CEO of alwaysAI. “CV provides intelligent sight to autonomous vehicles, like the shuttles from Local Motors, and presents a significant opportunity to improve services and features as AVs spread across our communities.”
alwaysAI plans to work with Local Motors to initially their customers smarter and safer onboarding experiences, particularly for customers with unique assistance needs such as wheelchairs or canes.
Alongside the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, the companies' first joint deployment of deep learning computer vision is intended to provide an easier onboarding experience for veterans in Palo Alto, Calif. In addition, Local Motors and alwaysAI said they will work to improve the overall in-cabin experience.
