OnRobot’s new 2FG14 and 3FG25 electrical grippers are designed to handle odd-shaped and cylindrical metal objects up to 55 pounds in CNC machine tending applications.
OnRobot debuted its new 2FG14 and 3FG25 electrical grippers for the North American market and announced the AutoPilot CNC machine tending system developed with Ellison Technologies.

Collaborative robot hardware and software provider OnRobot recently showcased its new 2FG14 and 3FG25 electrical grippers at Automate 2024 in booth 1424. The trade show is being held May 6-9 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois. Attendance is free.

A3 said this year’s show is the biggest yet, featuring more than 365,000 square feet of exhibit space, over 800 exhibitors, and an expected 30,000 registrants, with learning and networking opportunities. Attendees are able to see the latest in robotics, machine vision, artificial intelligence (AI), and motion control.

Grippers for CNC machine tending

OnRobot said a stronger end-effector, or end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) platform for industrial robots deployed in collaborative applications enables improved workpiece adaptability. The company’s new grippers offer an all-round plug and produce experience, including fingers with multiple configurations, flange adapters, cabling, and software that removes complexity of robot programming, said OnRobot.

“As cobots grow more powerful, OnRobot customers are scaling up their collaborative applications,” says Enrico Iversen, OnRobot CEO. “Building on the success of our existing, industry-proven gripper range, the new 3FG25 and 2FG14 grippers deliver unrivaled gripping and payload power while also providing customizability for heavy-duty applications, including harsh environments.”

CNC machine tending tending applications typically involve heavy metal workpieces. It’s a domain where OnRobot’s 3FG25 can be deployed, capable of handling cylindrical and odd-shaped items.

But handling heavier parts requires higher forces and handling bigger parts requires a finger platform designed to accommodate larger custom fingers. OnRobot said its new three-fingered 3FG25 gripper provides users with 25 kilograms, or about 55 pounds, of payload capacity in a compact, all-electric, lightweight form. Set to launch officially on May 30, pre-orders for the 3FG25 can be placed at Automate.

OnRobot’s newly-launched 2FG14 is also making its North American debut at Automate. Doubling the payload and gripping force of OnRobot’s 2FG7 gripper while also providing 30% more total stroke, the 2FG14 is a lightweight parallel finger gripper with a payload of 14 kilograms, or about 30 pounds. The gripper is designed for CNC machine tending applications that involve handling heavy metal workpieces, featuring a new base design for challenging work environments where workpieces are frequently exposed to oils or cutting fluids.

“The 2FG14 is a great gripper. It’s easy to use and allows our cobots to maintain maximum payload,” says Alex Pinkerton, mechanical engineer at Gosiger, a robotics integration firm. “It’s perfect for demanding packaging, machine tending, and assembly applications.”

Ellison Technologies and OnRobot launch AutoPilot powered by D:PLOY

OnRobot has also collaborated with Ellison Technologies, a provider of advanced machining solutions, to launch the new AutoPilot powered by D:PLOY software showcased at the Doosan Robotics booth. OnRobot said Ellison’s AutoPilot can simplify the process of deploying and redeploying CNC machine tending applications.

OnRobot’s D:PLOY is an automated platform for building, running, monitoring, and redeploying collaborative applications. D:PLOY automates the deployment process, which the company said has the potential to reduce deployment times and enables deployments to take place on the factory floor with limited programming or simulations required.

“Companies racing to plug labor gaps and meet growing demand in an uncertain economic climate can’t afford to spend weeks deploying and redeploying CNC machine tending automation,” said Greg Haley, Ellison Technologies VP of automation. “D:PLOY is the perfect software for Ellison’s AutoPilot solution as it decreases the programming complexity and makes part changeover a snap. This puts automated CNC machine tending in reach for more customers than ever, even those with high mix, low volume part runs.”
